Fisher v Millwall – The Battle of Southwark

Champion Hill StadiumFisher take on newly promoted neighbours Millwall just one year after previous incarnation Fisher Athletic were wound up and the club came close to going out of existence entirely.

Following the winding up order, 42 long standing supporters gathered at the Fisher Downside Centre on the evening of 28th May and vowed to keep the club alive. It was decided at the meeting that the club would reform as a supporters owned and run club with each member having an equal stake in the club as well as a say in how the club was run.

Just over a year (or 408 days) later, newly formed Fisher FC host Millwall FC in a pre-season friendly. From the very humble beginnings of trying to find a side to play in our friendlies back in July last year to this Saturdays game against Millwall it’s evident the club has made progress in the short time in existence.

Whilst Millwall’s first team are at Crawley Town on the same day, Millwall have informed the club that they will be bringing a strong XI down to Champion Hill Stadium and the possibility of ex-Fisher Athletic striker Shaun Batt returning to the club where he first made his name is an exciting prospect to look forward to.

Shaun Batt signed for Fisher Athletic from Dagenham & Redbridge in June 2007 and went on to make 33 appearances and score 11 goals, firing Fisher to a 4th placed finish in the Conference South and into the playoffs.

Batt went on to play for Peterborough United at the start of 2008-09 before being loaned out to Millwall in Januray 2010; scoring 3 goals in 16 appearances in the process. Millwall then snapped him up on a permanent transfer on 15 June 2010.

In addition to the presence of Millwall at Champion Hill on Saturday this special occasion also marks Fisher’s official launch as a supporters owned and run club. Following the members vote at the AGM in May, Fisher have now officially registered as an Industrial Provident Society and can guarantee that each and every full member owns an equal share in the club and is entitled to vote and stand for election at each AGM.

We hope to see you there.
