New to the Fish?

General Questions

Fisher FC – Cool name but how did it come about?

Saint John Fisher

The club was originally named after the Catholic martyr Saint John Fisher. This makes Fisher one of the few sports clubs in the world to take their name from a person rather than place.

The club are the continuation of ‘Fisher Athletic’ who were wound up by the high court over non-payment of debts on 13 May 2009.

Following a meeting on Druid Street in Bermondsey on the evening of 28 May, a supporters trust was formed to take control of all forthcoming club matters, with 37 founding members. This meeting announced ‘AFC Fisher’ as a working title, before a subsequent members meeting decided the new club name as ‘Fisher FC’.

There are various versions regarding the origins of the club and its founder but the following seems to be the most widely acknowledged.

The original club was founded in 1908 by a Mr Norman Potter to provide sporting and recreational facilities for underprivileged youths from Bermondsey.

The first club premises were based in Rose Court, Dockhead, Bermondsey in a building previously used as an old engineering shop. The ground floor was used for athletics, with the first and second floors used for recreational games such as ludo and draughts.

The club played junior and amateur football, often in assorted jerseys on a variety of park and local pitches in and around Bermondsey until as recently as the late 1960s.

Under the stewardship of bookmaker James Lane the club acquired their own ground in Mitcham, South London in 1970 and they played there until in 1982 when the granting of club senior status from the London FA coincided with a move to the purpose built and council owned Surrey Docks Stadium in Rotherhithe, just to the east of Bermondsey and less than one mile from where the club were first formed.

The club began ground-sharing with Dulwich Hamlet in East Dulwich in 2004 while planning permission was sought for a new stadium and new development was proposed at the Surrey Docks Stadium. Neither a new stadium or redeveloped Surrey Docks Stadium came to fruition and despite the winding up of Fisher Athletic in 2009 the supporter owned continuation; Fisher FC continue to ground share at Dulwich Hamlet whilst exploring options of a return to the north of the Borough.

Getting to a game

What game can I go to?

Our season runs from mid-August to early May, with our usual matchdays being on Saturdays and Monday nights, starting at 3:00pm and 7:45pm respectively. We keep our website’s Fixtures and Results up to date with our latest fixtures, so you can check there to see when we are next at home.

However, due to our groundshare, we sometimes have a clash with our landlords and may play on alternative days, and sometimes fixtures are moved due to cup committments or postponed due to the weather, so please do double check before travelling and always check this website and our Twitter feed for the latest information.

How do I get a ticket and how much does it cost?

The club are committed to providing an affordable alternative to the often expensive Premier League and Championship ticket prices found elsewhere in London. With this in mind we try to keep ticket prices as low as possible whilst balancing the club’s needs to ensure we remain sustainable, profitable and can continue to progess. Adult entry is £6, Concessions are £4 and Under 16s are free to attend if accompanied by a paying adult – £1 otherwise.

We do not usually sell tickets in advance, so you can turn up and pay on the day. The turnstiles for all fans are on the left as you enter the football club car park and usually open around an hour before kick-off.

At the game

Where do I sit?

As usually found at non-league football we do not segregate our games and so you are free to sit or stand wherever you like. We have an all seated stand (The Tommy Jover Stand) on the bar side of the pitch (facing you and to your right as you walk in), and covered terracing is available on the other side of the halfway line (the shed end) which, like the main stand, offers shelter in wet weather.

For a first time visitor, the best overall view and most comfortable position is found in the seated ‘Tommy Jover’ stand.

Where can I get something to eat or drink?

Tea, coffee, hot chocolate, Bovril and soft drinks as well as quarter pounders, bacon-cheese burgers and hotdogs are available from Anne’s tea bar which is situated underneath the steps of the main stand near the entrance to the ground.

Is there a bar to buy alcohol?

Yes a bar is available above the main stand where a selection of wines, draught and bottled beers are avaialble at very reasonable prices.

What else happens at the game?

We play a selection of music over the tannoy before the game and at half-time. We also have the 50-50 draw and the excellent match day programme to read.

There’s another game I’d like to see on TV, will you show it?

The bar has a large screen with a licence to screen Sky Sports and all Sky Sports games will be shown on in the bar.

Is it possible for my child to be a mascot on a match-day?

Yes just contact us in advance at info@fisherfc.co.uk.

I’ve still got a question, who can I ask?

Email info@fisherfc.co.uk for any further questions.
